La Fortuna and Arenal
Base · 3–4 nights
The province’s strongest base for hot springs, volcano trails, hanging bridges, rafting and waterfall days. It is busy and expensive, but the concentration of lodging and operators makes it the practical choice for most first visits.
Poás Volcano and the coffee highlands
Short stop · 1 night
The best major-volcano outing from the airport, paired easily with coffee farms and dairy-country stops. Go early and treat the crater view as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
Bijagua and Río Celeste
Base · 2 nights
A rural base for Tenorio Volcano National Park and the Río Celeste trail, which deserves more than a rushed day trip from La Fortuna. Two nights gives you a realistic shot at the river in decent conditions.
Caño Negro and Los Chiles wetlands
Base · 2 nights
Come for guided boat time through channels and wetlands, not resort polish. This is the province’s best counterpoint to the volcano circuit, especially for birds and lowland wildlife.
Lake Arenal and El Castillo
Short stop · 1 night
The quieter west side of Arenal trades La Fortuna’s restaurant density for lake-and-volcano views, slower lodges and easy access to kayaking. Stay here if you have a car and want the scenery to be the point.
Bajos del Toro
Base · 2 nights
A steep cloud-forest and waterfall district for travelers willing to handle slow, wet mountain roads. It feels far more remote and cooler than La Fortuna, but it is not a casual overnight detour.
Alajuela city and the SJO airport corridor
Short stop · 1 night
Use it for a sensible arrival or departure night rather than forcing a mountain transfer after a flight. The compact center has a market, the Juan Santamaría museum and enough local life for a worthwhile morning.
Grecia, Sarchí and Naranjo
The Central Valley’s coffee-and-craft belt is best done as a slow driving day, with Sarchí’s painted oxcart tradition providing the clearest reason to stop. It is a useful break between the airport area and the north, not a major attraction cluster.
Zarcero and the high dairy country
A cool, low-key upland stop for cheese, bakeries and the topiary-filled central park. It works well for lunch or a quiet break from the Arenal tourism machine, but rarely needs a dedicated stay.
Ciudad Quesada and the San Carlos heartland
Short stop · 1 night
This is the working agricultural center of San Carlos, useful for regional food and dairy culture—especially queso palmito—rather than resort scenery. Sleep here only if you want local life, a fair, or a practical road-break.
Compact first visit
5 nightsAlajuela city and the SJO airport corridor (1 night) → Poás Volcano and the coffee highlands (1 night) → La Fortuna and Arenal (3 nights)
The sensible first-timer plan: recover near the airport, give Poás its own weather-dependent morning, then spend the real trip in La Fortuna. Do not cram Río Celeste into this itinerary.
Plan this routeClassic volcano and Río Celeste loop
8 nightsAlajuela city and the SJO airport corridor (1 night) → La Fortuna and Arenal (4 nights) → Bijagua and Río Celeste (2 nights) → Alajuela city and the SJO airport corridor (1 night)
The best all-round province-only route. Four nights in La Fortuna leaves room for hot springs, a volcano trail and one adventure day; Bijagua avoids turning Río Celeste into an exhausting return drive.

For travelers who want more than the standard Arenal circuit. It adds a proper wetland base for guided boat wildlife viewing, rather than treating Caño Negro as a drive-by afterthought.

A road trip for repeat visitors who want cloud forest, dairy country and wetlands as well as Arenal. The one-night San Carlos stop is deliberately practical; keep transfer days free of paid activities.
