Dubrovnik
Base · 3–4 nights
The essential first stop for the walls, Old Town museums and evening atmosphere after the day-trippers leave. Sleep in Lapad, Gruž or Ploče rather than paying a premium to be inside the walls.
Cavtat & Konavle
Base · 2 nights
A calmer southern coast-and-countryside counterweight to Dubrovnik, with Cavtat’s harbor walks, swimming coves, vineyards and rural konobas. Best as a day trip or a deliberate two-night slowdown, not as a substitute for Dubrovnik itself.
Lokrum
Dubrovnik’s easy half-day escape: shade, swimming spots, botanical gardens and walking trails a short boat ride from the Old Port. It is popular and managed, but far better than spending every warm afternoon on the city walls.
Elaphiti Islands
Koločep, Lopud and Šipan offer low-key villages, pine woods and coves without an overnight ferry commitment. Pick one island properly—Lopud for beach and lunch, Koločep for walking and swimming, Šipan for rural quiet—instead of joining a rushed three-island circuit.
Ston & Mali Ston
Come for the long defensive walls, salt pans and oyster beds of Mali Ston Bay. This is the place to make a serious oyster-and-mussel lunch, then continue into Pelješac rather than lingering for days in town.
Pelješac
Base · 2–3 nights
The region’s real wine country: steep Dingač and Postup slopes, quiet coves, seafood and the maritime town of Orebić. It rewards a car and at least two nights; it is too long and spread out for a casual Dubrovnik day trip.
Korčula Town & Lumbarda
Base · 2–3 nights
The most rounded island stay combines Korčula Town’s compact stone lanes with Lumbarda’s beaches and Grk vineyards. It has enough restaurants, swimming and village life to justify three nights, not a rushed excursion from Dubrovnik.
Western Korčula
Around Vela Luka, Korčula becomes slower, less polished and more local-feeling, with old villages and coves rather than landmark sightseeing. Choose it for a longer island stay or as a useful stepping stone toward Lastovo.
Mljet
Base · 2 nights
A forested reset from Dubrovnik, centered on the saltwater lakes, cycling and kayaking around Mljet National Park near Pomena and Polače. Stay one or two nights; a same-day ferry trip leaves too little time once port logistics are counted.
Lastovo
Base · 3 nights
The farthest and least convenient island is for real quiet: dark skies, diving, coves, fishing villages and sparse services. Give it at least three nights and accept that ferry timetables, rather than sightseeing lists, set the rhythm.
Neretva Valley
A lowland detour of canals, wetlands, citrus groves and eel-and-frog brodetto, utterly different from the coast and islands. It makes sense for a car-based trip of ten nights or more, not before Dubrovnik, Pelješac or Korčula.
Essential first visit
6 nights / 7 daysDubrovnik (4 nights) → Korčula Town & Lumbarda (2 nights)
The sensible first trip: Dubrovnik for the walls, Old Town and one near-island day, then Korčula for a proper island finish. Use Dubrovnik for Lokrum or the Elaphiti Islands and make Ston & Mali Ston a day trip; do not waste time adding Mljet or Lastovo.
Plan this routeWine, oysters and island town
8 nights / 9 daysDubrovnik (3 nights) → Pelješac (2 nights) → Korčula Town & Lumbarda (3 nights)
For travelers who care as much about lunch and landscape as landmarks. Start with Dubrovnik, then use a car for Ston & Mali Ston, Pelješac wineries and coves before crossing from Orebić to Korčula. This is the strongest food-and-wine route in the county.
Plan this routeGreen island and coastal classics
10 nights / 11 daysDubrovnik (3 nights) → Mljet (2 nights) → Korčula Town & Lumbarda (3 nights) → Pelješac (2 nights)
A fuller itinerary that gives Mljet enough time for the national park rather than treating it as a ferry photo stop. It works best from late spring to early autumn, when boat connections are useful; check schedules before committing to the sequence.
Plan this routeThe quiet-island deep cut
14 nights / 15 daysDubrovnik (3 nights) → Cavtat & Konavle (2 nights) → Pelješac (3 nights) → Korčula Town & Lumbarda (3 nights) → Lastovo (3 nights)
For repeat visitors willing to travel slowly. Cavtat & Konavle provides a soft landing, Pelješac and Korčula carry the food-and-wine core, and Lastovo gets the three nights it needs to justify the long catamaran ride. Skip Mljet unless you can add at least two more nights.
