Greater Cairo, Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur
Base · 4 nights
The essential opening act: pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum on the west side, then Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and the capital’s full-volume street life. Give it three full days; traffic and site distances punish compressed plans.
Luxor
Base · 2–3 nights
Egypt’s archaeological heavyweight, split between Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East Bank and the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu on the West Bank. Three nights is the minimum that keeps Karnak and the tombs from becoming a sprint.
Aswan, Elephantine and Nubian villages
Base · 2–3 nights
Slower, greener and more human-scaled than Luxor, with Philae, felucca sailing, Elephantine Island and Nubian culture rather than an endless monument checklist. Stay long enough to do more than the High Dam circuit.
Luxor–Aswan Nile
Base · 3 nights
The river corridor via Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo is where transport can genuinely be part of the trip. A three-night Luxor–Aswan cruise trades flexibility for a calmer, unpack-once way to see the major temples.
Abu Simbel and Lake Nasser
Ramesses II’s relocated temples are as overwhelming as advertised, but getting there from Aswan means a long, very early road day unless you fly. It earns an overnight or a Lake Nasser cruise on a less rushed itinerary.
Alexandria
Base · 2 nights
A Mediterranean reset after Cairo: seafood, cafés, the corniche, harbor views and faded cosmopolitan architecture, with the Bibliotheca as the main cultural anchor. Worth an overnight or two, but not at the expense of Luxor on a first trip.
Red Sea Coast: Hurghada, El Gouna, Safaga and Marsa Alam
Base · 4 nights
Come for reefs and recovery, not Egyptian urban life. Hurghada is easiest for flights and hotel choice, El Gouna is polished and contained, while Marsa Alam is the better pick for quieter, dive-led days.
South Sinai: Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab and St Catherine
Egypt’s strongest beach-and-landscape combination: resort diving at Sharm, a more independent rhythm in Dahab, and mountain desert around St Catherine. Fly in rather than treating it as a casual Cairo road extension.
Fayoum Oasis and Wadi El Rayan
Base · 2 nights
The most useful short escape from Cairo: lake country, desert edges, pottery villages and Wadi El Rayan’s landscapes, with Wadi Al-Hitan for fossil-country drama. Better as one or two nights than a rushed substitute for Upper Egypt.
Siwa Oasis
Base · 4 nights
A genuinely different Egypt of salt lakes, palms, mud-brick lanes, dates and Amazigh influence near the Libyan frontier. Its isolation is the point—and why it needs dedicated travel days rather than a slot in a short first visit.
White Desert and the Western Oases
Bahariya and the White Desert deliver the chalk formations, black-desert horizons and desert camping that the Nile itinerary cannot. This is a guided, logistics-heavy extension for travelers with time and a reliable operator, not a self-drive add-on.
Classic first trip
9 nightsGreater Cairo, Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur (4 nights) → Luxor (3 nights) → Aswan, Elephantine and Nubian villages (2 nights)
The right first Egypt itinerary: the capital and pyramid fields, then the two essential Upper Egypt bases. Fly Cairo–Luxor if you can; it saves a useful day even though airport logistics still make it a transfer day. Luxor–Aswan is manageable by train or private transfer, but do not try to bolt on Alexandria, Sinai or Siwa.
Plan this routeNile cruise without the hotel-hopping
11 nightsGreater Cairo, Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur (4 nights) → Luxor (2 nights) → Luxor–Aswan Nile (3 nights) → Aswan, Elephantine and Nubian villages (2 nights)
For travelers who want Egypt’s big sites but do not enjoy packing every morning. Give Luxor two nights before boarding, then use the three-night cruise for Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo rather than rushing that corridor by road. The trade-off is a fixed ship timetable; the payoff is that the Nile journey feels like travel, not a transfer.
Plan this routeTemples first, Red Sea recovery last
14 nightsGreater Cairo, Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur (4 nights) → Luxor (3 nights) → Aswan, Elephantine and Nubian villages (3 nights) → Red Sea Coast: Hurghada, El Gouna, Safaga and Marsa Alam (4 nights)
The sensible culture-and-beach route: do Cairo and Upper Egypt while your energy is high, then end with reefs and a pool. Use a flight for Cairo–Luxor and expect a domestic connection or routing via Cairo to reach the coast from Aswan. Pick Marsa Alam for quieter diving, or Hurghada/El Gouna for easier flights and a wider hotel range.
Plan this routeSecond visit: Mediterranean, oasis and deep south
18 nightsGreater Cairo, Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur (4 nights) → Alexandria (2 nights) → Fayoum Oasis and Wadi El Rayan (2 nights) → Luxor (3 nights) → Aswan, Elephantine and Nubian villages (3 nights) → Siwa Oasis (4 nights)
A deliberately sprawling repeat-visitor route for people who want more than the standard monument circuit. Alexandria and Fayoum are easy Cairo-side contrasts; Luxor and Aswan restore the historical core. Siwa is the hard-earned finale, not a casual add-on: budget essentially a travel day in each direction and use flights or a carefully planned return via Cairo rather than pretending the map is small.
