How to eat here
Eat along the central Malecón and in Centro, where La Paz’s low-key, port-city seafood culture is more convincing than resort dining; the marina is convenient but can feel more visitor-facing. Make fish tacos and clams a daytime priority, then return to the waterfront for a slow seafood dinner after sunset—this is a city that rewards lingering rather than chasing a formal fine-dining scene.
Fish tacos, ideally simply dressed so the day’s catch—not heavy toppings—does the work · Chocolate clams (almejas chocolatas), the large local clams served grilled or prepared in seafood dishes · Fresh Sea of Cortez seafood: shrimp, scallops, octopus and whatever local fish is best that day · Smoked marlin, often appearing in tacos, tostadas or other casual preparations · The Baja ritual of seafood tostadas and cold beer after a beach, boat or snorkeling day
- For the best concentration of eating, use Centro and the central Malecón; they suit a food-focused evening far better than treating the city only as a departure point for Balandra or Espíritu Santo.
- Ask what is freshest rather than ordering a fixed species. Availability follows fishing and seasonality, and that flexibility is part of eating well here.
- Public-market food and seafood counters are most useful in the morning and around lunch; do not leave market eating until late afternoon, when choice and energy drop off.
- Dinner runs later than a North American early meal, and the Malecón is especially pleasant around sunset; reserve ahead for a sought-after table in busy holiday periods and weekends rather than assuming a waterfront walk-in.
- On boat and beach days, carry water and plan food around departure times: Balandra and Espíritu Santo are day commitments, not excursions to squeeze around a serious city lunch.
- Keep expectations calibrated: La Paz excels at straightforward seafood and tacos, not Cabo-style polished resort gastronomy. Tip in the usual Mexican range—roughly 10–15% for good table service—while checking whether a service charge has already been added.
