Ensenada
Base · 2 nights
The most useful first-trip base: strong seafood, a real working-city center, craft beer, and easy access to La Bufadora and Valle de Guadalupe. It is less polished than the wine valley but far better for eating and day-trip flexibility.
Valle de Guadalupe
Base · 1–2 nights
Baja’s serious wine-country stop for tastings, destination lunches and design-forward stays among dry vineyards. Stay two nights if wine is the point; it is spread out, costly, and a poor place to improvise without a driver.
Tijuana
Short stop · 1 night
Use it for an energetic urban night rather than a long stay: excellent tacos, Caesar salad, craft beer, galleries and border-city intensity. It is the practical gateway, but traffic and uneven walkability make Ensenada a better leisure base.
Rosarito and Puerto Nuevo
Short stop · 1 night
A straightforward Pacific beach break south of Tijuana, with surf, sunsets and the classic Puerto Nuevo lobster lunch. Rosarito is built-up and weekend-oriented, so treat Puerto Nuevo as a meal stop rather than a destination in itself.
Tecate
Short stop · 1 night
A quieter inland stop for excellent bread, local beer, ranch-country meals and access to smaller wine valleys. It works best for one relaxed night at the end of a Pacific-and-wine loop, not as an attraction-packed city break.
Mexicali
Short stop · 1 night
Come specifically for Chinese-Mexican cooking, carne asada and a more local version of Baja than the Pacific corridor offers. It makes sense on an eastern driving loop, not as a detour from a short Ensenada-and-Valle trip.
San Felipe and the Upper Gulf
Base · 1–2 nights
This is Baja’s Sea of Cortez side: warm-water beaches, tidal flats, Gulf seafood and the giant cardón cacti of Valle de los Gigantes. It deserves its own overnight stop rather than a punishing day trip from Ensenada or Tijuana.
San Quintín
Base · 2 nights
A quiet agricultural-and-fishing stop where oysters, volcanic scenery, birdlife and empty Pacific beaches matter more than nightlife or polished hotels. It is the right first move south for travelers continuing into remote Baja.
Sierra de San Pedro Mártir
Base · 2 nights
High conifer forest, hiking and observatory-country views provide the sharpest contrast to Baja’s coastal and desert stereotypes. Go only with a vehicle, enough time, and tolerance for a long approach road and weather-dependent access.
Bahía de los Ángeles
Base · 3 nights
A remote Gulf outpost for boat trips, sea lions, kayaking and the stark meeting of desert, islands and blue water. The payoff is genuine quiet, but services are basic and the drive requires planning rather than spontaneity.
Intelligent first taste
5 days / 4 nightsTijuana (1 night) → Ensenada (2 nights) → Valle de Guadalupe (1 night)
The right first itinerary if time is short. Use Tijuana for dinner and the gateway logistics, make Ensenada the seafood-and-coast base, then finish with a properly paced wine-country night. Do not dilute it by adding the eastern desert.

8 days / 7 nightsTijuana (1 night) → Rosarito and Puerto Nuevo (1 night) → Ensenada (2 nights) → Valle de Guadalupe (2 nights) → Tecate (1 night)
For travelers who want coast, lobster, serious seafood and wine without treating Baja as a racecourse. Rosarito is a beach pause, not the main event; Valle gets two nights so nobody has to stack tastings and long drives.

10 days / 9 nightsTijuana (1 night) → Ensenada (2 nights) → Valle de Guadalupe (2 nights) → Tecate (1 night) → Mexicali (1 night) → San Felipe and the Upper Gulf (2 nights)
A car-only first-time loop for travelers who want Baja’s Pacific and Sea of Cortez sides in one trip. It earns the long inland drives with Mexicali’s Chinese-Mexican food and San Felipe’s Gulf landscape; leave a buffer before any flight or border crossing.

For confident self-drivers who value oysters, mountain forest, remote Gulf water and empty-road scale over comfort and urban sightseeing. This is deliberately slow around Sierra de San Pedro Mártir and Bahía de los Ángeles, where rushed overnights make little sense.
