Grand Case
Base · 4–7 nights
The best all-round first base: a compact north-coast village where you can swim, eat serious French-Creole food and walk home from dinner. Petite Plage is the better nearby swimming and snorkeling option.
Orient Bay
Base · 4 nights
The French side's most straightforward beach-holiday base, with a long sandy shore, beach clubs, watersports and enough restaurants to avoid constant driving. It is more exposed to wind and seaweed than the sheltered west-facing coves.
Marigot and Concordia
Come for market supplies, bakeries, Creole lunches, waterfront lolos and the view from Fort Louis. It has real town texture but is better for a daytime visit or value-minded longer stay than a beach-resort escape.
Cul-de-Sac and Îlet Pinel
Cul-de-Sac is the practical launch point for Pinel, the easy marine-reserve day out: shallow water, beach lunch, iguanas and a short walk to the wilder Atlantic side. Treat it as a full-day outing rather than a quick stop.
Tintamarre
The proper boat-day destination: an uninhabited reserve island with bright water, snorkeling and a welcome break from developed beaches. Go only when sea conditions are good, and keep a backup day.
Friar's Bay and Happy Bay
Friar's Bay delivers easy, calm-water swimming and food; a short headland walk reaches more undeveloped Happy Bay. Bring water for Happy Bay—there are few services and little shade.
Anse Marcel
A polished, sheltered cove with some of the calmest water on the French side and a marina useful for boat excursions. It is lovely for the day but too isolated to be the obvious first base.
Baie Nettlé and Terres Basses
Base · 3 nights
The west-facing villa-and-sunset stretch, with Baie Rouge and Baie Longue for handsome beach days. Pick it for privacy and a rental house, not if you want to walk to dinner.
Quartier d'Orléans and Oyster Pond
A more residential, less polished eastern side where Creole food and local rhythm matter more than resort convenience. It works best with a car and a willingness to seek things out.
Pic Paradis and Loterie Farm
The useful break-from-the-beach option: viewpoints around Pic Paradis and a managed rainforest day at Loterie Farm with hikes, pool time and ziplining. Expect an activity venue, not remote wilderness.
Classic first visit from Grand Case
7 nightsGrand Case (7 nights)
The sensible first-trip plan for travelers who want food and easy beach days without packing and unpacking. Use Grand Case for day trips to Marigot, Pinel, Orient Bay, Friar's Bay and—if conditions cooperate—Tintamarre.
Plan this routeBeach-and-food split
8 nightsOrient Bay (4 nights) → Grand Case (4 nights)
For travelers who genuinely want both Orient Bay's active beach setup and Grand Case's walkable dinner scene. The transfer is short, so this is a change of mood rather than a travel day.
Plan this routeDeeper French-side stay
12 nightsGrand Case (5 nights) → Orient Bay (4 nights) → Baie Nettlé and Terres Basses (3 nights)
A worthwhile three-base version only for a longer trip. Start with north-coast dining and calm coves, add Pinel and Tintamarre from the east, then finish in a quiet villa-or-hotel setting with west-coast sunsets.
Plan this routeFour-night reset
4 nightsGrand Case (4 nights)
The right short break: settle into Grand Case, take one full Pinel day, and choose either Marigot plus Friar's Bay or a lazy beach day. Trying to cover every coast in four nights is a bad use of the island.
