  United States Air Force Academy

  North Colorado Springs and the Air Force Academy · 2 h

  The Academy combines a dramatic foothill setting with a distinctive mid-century military campus and the iconic Cadet Chapel area. Security and construction can change visitor access, so check the current visitor-center and chapel arrangements before committing to the drive.

Downtown is the least complicated first-visit base: the most walkable concentration of hotels, restaurants, museums and evening options, plus THE ZEB and the best local bus connections. You will still want a car or tours for the big outdoor sights, but it gives a visitor something to do after returning from them.

• Garden of the Gods: walk the Perkins Central Garden Trail or explore farther trails among the formations; entry is free, though peak-time parking is not painless.
• Red Rock Canyon Open Space: a less manicured, more local-feeling alternative west of town, with red-rock trails and views toward Garden of the Gods.
• Helen Hunt Falls and North Cheyenne Cañon: a short waterfall walk and canyon scenery; arrive early on summer weekends.
• Manitou Springs mineral-springs walk: wander the compact historic center and sample the distinct public springs; it is kitschy in places, but considerably more interesting on foot than from a car.
• Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum: a worthwhile downtown history museum in the old courthouse, generally free to visit; confirm same-day hours before making a special trip.
• Downtown/Colorado College walk: start around Acacia Park, walk Tejon Street, then head north through the Colorado College area for a sense of the city beyond the tourist corridors.
• U.S. Air Force Academy visitor areas and grounds access: the setting is excellent and entry has traditionally been free, but security procedures and Cadet Chapel access can change; check current visitor requirements before driving north.
• Palmer Park: free urban open space with broad city-and-mountain views, especially good near sunset; use marked trails and do not leave valuables in the car.
