Miami, Miami Beach and Greater Miami
Base · 2–3 days
Florida’s strongest city break: Art Deco South Beach, Little Havana, Wynwood, Coconut Grove, serious Cuban and Caribbean food, and Biscayne Bay. Base here for urban energy and culture, not for a quiet beach holiday.
Florida Keys
Base · 3 days
The Overseas Highway links Key Largo’s reefs, Islamorada’s fishing culture, Marathon’s bridges and Key West’s eccentric, walkable finale. Give it several nights; Miami-to-Key West is a road trip, not a day excursion.
Everglades, Big Cypress and the Ten Thousand Islands
Short stop · 1 day
Come for sawgrass, alligators, birds, mangrove waterways and a real break from Florida’s built-up coast. It works best as a Miami, Homestead, Naples or Everglades City excursion rather than a rushed drive-through.
Naples, Marco Island and the Fort Myers/Sanibel area
Base · 2–3 days
This is the polished southwest Gulf: broad sunset beaches, shelling, boating and easy access to the western Everglades. It is for slowing down, not packing in attractions.
Tampa Bay: Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater
Base · 2–4 days
The state’s most useful west-coast combination of city food and history, St. Pete arts, and Gulf beaches. Stay in St. Pete for evenings and museums, Tampa for Ybor and restaurants, or Clearwater only when beach convenience is the priority.
Sarasota, Anna Maria Island and the Bradenton coast
A lower-key Gulf base with the Ringling, Siesta Key, Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island close at hand. Choose it over Clearwater when low-rise beach towns and a quieter pace matter more than nightlife.
Orlando, Winter Park and Kissimmee
Base · 3–4 days
Orlando is an attraction ecosystem: Disney, Universal, water parks and vast family accommodation, with Winter Park as the worthwhile non-park reset. Treat it as a dedicated base rather than trying to bolt on beaches and distant day trips every day.
Space Coast: Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center
Pair Kennedy Space Center with Atlantic surf beaches, wildlife refuges and possible launch viewing. It is the best non-Disney side trip from Orlando, but launches are a bonus rather than something to schedule a whole trip around.
St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beaches and Amelia Island
Short stop · 1 day
Florida’s First Coast trades Miami gloss for Spanish-colonial lanes, fort history, marshes and Atlantic beaches. Use St. Augustine for history and atmosphere, then add Amelia Island if you want a quieter historic-and-marsh stay.
Central Springs Country
Around Gainesville, High Springs, Ocala and the Suwannee basin, clear spring water and rivers replace beaches and resorts. Go to paddle, tube, swim and dive; this is practical, car-dependent outdoor Florida.
Florida Panhandle
Pensacola, Destin, 30A/South Walton, Panama City Beach and Apalachicola deliver white sand, pine woods, fishing fleets and Southern seafood. Pick one stretch as a beach-week base; it is too far from Miami or Orlando to tack onto a short trip.
First Florida: Orlando, Miami and the Keys
9 daysOrlando, Winter Park and Kissimmee (4 days) → Miami, Miami Beach and Greater Miami (2 days) → Florida Keys (3 days)
The headline first trip without the usual fantasy of seeing all of Florida. Give Orlando enough time for two or three park days, use Miami for neighborhoods and food rather than a checklist, then finish in the Keys at a slower pace. Fly out of Key West if possible; otherwise add a return day to Miami.

8 daysOrlando, Winter Park and Kissimmee (4 days) → Tampa Bay: Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater (4 days)
For families or couples who want major parks but refuse to spend the entire holiday in resort corridors. Base in St. Petersburg for better evenings, museums and beach access; choose Tampa instead if Ybor, restaurants and sports matter more than sand.

7 daysMiami, Miami Beach and Greater Miami (3 days) → Everglades, Big Cypress and the Ten Thousand Islands (1 day) → Naples, Marco Island and the Fort Myers/Sanibel area (3 days)
The right choice for adults, photographers and water-minded travelers who would rather see mangroves and Gulf sunsets than race between Miami and Orlando. Rent a car, cross through the Everglades or Big Cypress deliberately, and let Naples or Marco Island be the quiet finish.

A substantial but workable first road trip through South, Gulf, central and northeast Florida. It earns its long drives by showing genuinely different Floridas; do not add the Panhandle unless you can extend the trip by at least three or four days.
