Las Vegas
Base · 2 days
Nevada’s essential first stop for headline shows, serious dining and the full absurdity of the Strip. Split time between the Strip, Fremont Street and the Arts District rather than treating it as one walkable district.
Red Rock Canyon and Spring Mountains
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
The most convincing desert escape from Las Vegas, with sandstone walls, short hikes and a scenic drive close enough for a half- or full-day outing. Go early; this is not a place to test your heat tolerance.
Valley of Fire and Moapa Valley
Short stop · 1 day
Nevada’s strongest Las Vegas day trip: vivid red sandstone, petroglyphs and short hikes that feel more substantial than their drive time suggests. Give it a full daylight day rather than squeezing it between pool time and a show.
Boulder City, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead
Short stop · 0.5 days
A useful low-key counterweight to Las Vegas, combining Hoover Dam’s genuinely startling scale with lake views and Boulder City’s calmer streets. It works best as one car-based day, not as separate excursions.
Reno
Base · 1–2 days
A practical northern base with an airport, food, breweries and the Truckee River, but its real value is access to Tahoe and western Nevada. Stay a night or two, then use it to anchor day trips rather than expecting a destination city on Las Vegas’s scale.
Nevada-side Lake Tahoe
Base · 2–4 days
Use Stateline for Heavenly, casinos and late nights; choose Incline Village or Crystal Bay for a quieter lake stay. This is Nevada’s best zone for skiing, swimming, boating and alpine hiking, but peak-season lodging and traffic are punishing.
Carson City, Virginia City and Carson Valley
Short stop · 1 day
A compact western-Nevada circuit for Comstock mining history, state-capital stops, ranch country and Basque food. Virginia City is touristy, but the mining landscape and surviving town fabric are worth seeing if you calibrate expectations.
Ely, Baker and Great Basin National Park
Base · 3–4 days
The best choice for travelers who want Nevada at its emptiest and most dramatic: Lehman Caves, bristlecone pines, Wheeler Peak and exceptional dark skies. Sleep in Baker for park access or Ely for more services; do not underestimate the distances.
Elko and the Ruby Mountains
Base · 2 days
Elko makes sense for its working-ranch character and Basque-American culture, while nearby Lamoille Canyon delivers unexpectedly alpine terrain without Tahoe crowds. Come deliberately, not because it happens to be on the way.
Black Rock Desert and Gerlach
A huge, exposed playa-and-backcountry landscape for travelers prepared to be self-reliant, not a casual rental-car detour. Gerlach is the staging point; beyond it, road conditions, fuel, water and vehicle capability dictate the trip.
Southern Nevada first-timer
4 daysLas Vegas (2 days) → Red Rock Canyon and Spring Mountains (Half day) → Valley of Fire and Moapa Valley (1 day) → Boulder City, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead (Half day)
The right short Nevada trip: two proper Vegas nights, then one close-in desert day and one car-based history-and-water day. Red Rock and Valley of Fire are separate outings, but both are easy from a Las Vegas base.
Plan this routeLas Vegas to Great Basin road trip
7 daysLas Vegas (2 days) → Valley of Fire and Moapa Valley (1 day) → Ely, Baker and Great Basin National Park (4 days)
For travelers who want the contrast Nevada actually does best: Las Vegas excess followed by empty roads, mining-country texture, caves, bristlecones and dark skies. Use Ely for services, then shift to Baker or stay nearby for serious park time.
Plan this routeReno, Tahoe and western Nevada
7-8 daysReno (2 days) → Nevada-side Lake Tahoe (3-4 days) → Carson City, Virginia City and Carson Valley (1 day)
Nevada’s easiest relaxed loop. Reno handles arrival and city time; sleep at Tahoe if lake or ski days are the point, then give the Carson City–Virginia City–Carson Valley circuit one unhurried day rather than trying to bolt it onto a Tahoe transfer.
Plan this routeThe serious Nevada traverse
13-14 daysLas Vegas (2 days) → Red Rock Canyon and Spring Mountains (1 day) → Valley of Fire and Moapa Valley (1 day) → Ely, Baker and Great Basin National Park (3 days) → Elko and the Ruby Mountains (2 days) → Reno (1-2 days) → Nevada-side Lake Tahoe (2 days) → Carson City, Virginia City and Carson Valley (1 day)
An open-jaw Las Vegas-to-Reno trip for travelers who genuinely want Nevada beyond the Strip. It gives the long central transfers enough room, keeps Great Basin and Elko meaningful rather than token stops, and finishes with Tahoe and western mining-country history.
