Portland
Base · 1–4 days
Oregon’s best food, coffee, bookstore and neighborhood-city stop, and the logical gateway for a first trip. Give it several nights; the good stuff is spread across districts rather than concentrated downtown.
Columbia River Gorge
Base · 1–2 days
The essential Portland-side landscape: waterfall hikes and historic highway viewpoints in the west, then orchards, vineyards and wind sports toward Hood River. Stay in Hood River rather than treating the whole gorge as a rushed day trip.
Willamette Valley
Pinot Noir country with worthwhile food stops around Dundee, Newberg and McMinnville, plus Silver Falls and Eugene at its edges. Come for tastings and farm-country pacing, not dramatic scenery.
North Coast
Base · 2 days
The most practical coast extension from Portland, combining Astoria’s maritime character with Cannon Beach’s Haystack Rock and quieter Manzanita. Base in Cannon Beach for beach access or Astoria for more substance after dark.
Bend
Base · 2–3 days
Oregon’s strongest outdoor base outside Portland: river time, trail networks, breweries, skiing access and easy drives to Sisters and Smith Rock. It works because it has enough lodging, restaurants and gear infrastructure to support several active days.
Mount Hood
A realistic mountain escape from Portland or Hood River, centered on Timberline Lodge, ski areas, lakes and summer trails. Go for a clear-day mountain outing or snow sports, not because you expect dependable views.
Crater Lake and Klamath Basin
Short stop · 1 day
Crater Lake is Oregon’s one non-negotiable national-park-scale sight: give Rim Drive a full day and sleep nearby or continue deliberately to Ashland. It is too remote and weather-sensitive to treat as a casual detour.
Ashland and the Rogue Valley
Base · 1–2 days
Ashland is the appealing southern base for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, with Rogue Valley wineries, Jacksonville and rafting close by. Pair it with Crater Lake or use it as a deliberate Medford-flight finish, rather than lingering without a theatre or wine plan.
Central Coast
Base · 2 days
Newport and Yachats make this Oregon’s most useful multi-night coast zone: aquarium and working-harbor energy in Newport, then rugged shoreline and headlands southward. It is more practical for a proper coastal stay than a Portland weekend dash.
South Coast and Oregon Dunes
Base · 2 days
The slower, wilder coast for travelers with time: dunes around Florence, sea stacks at Bandon and dramatic southern headlands near Brookings. This is a road-trip commitment, not an add-on to Portland.
Eastern Oregon
Pendleton, Baker City, Joseph and the Wallowas offer the state’s best second-trip territory: rodeo and trail history, high-country hiking, Wallowa Lake and real distance from the Portland orbit. Build a dedicated itinerary around it rather than squeezing it into a west-side trip.
Portland with real excursions
4 daysPortland (4 days)
For food-first first-timers who want a proper city stay, not a rushed statewide checklist. Use two days for Portland neighborhoods, then take full-day outings to the Columbia River Gorge and either Mount Hood or the Willamette Valley.

8 daysPortland (3 days) → Columbia River Gorge (2 days) → North Coast (2 days) → Portland (1 day)
The strongest first Oregon road trip for travelers who care more about restaurants, waterfalls, wine and beach scenery than collecting distant landmarks. Base the Gorge portion in Hood River and the coast portion in Cannon Beach or Astoria; the final Portland night removes airport-day stress.

10 daysPortland (3 days) → Columbia River Gorge (2 days) → Bend (3 days) → Crater Lake and Klamath Basin (1 day) → Ashland and the Rogue Valley (1 day)
For a first proper road trip with an open-jaw flight out of Medford. It earns its driving with a clean progression from city and Gorge to high desert, then gives Crater Lake the full day it needs before finishing in Ashland. Add a night in Ashland if theatre is the point rather than a pleasant finish.

14 daysPortland (3 days) → North Coast (2 days) → Central Coast (2 days) → South Coast and Oregon Dunes (2 days) → Ashland and the Rogue Valley (2 days) → Bend (2 days) → Columbia River Gorge (1 day)
For travelers with two weeks who want to drive Oregon’s coast properly rather than race it, then cut inland through Crater Lake country to Ashland and Bend. Keep transfer days disciplined—especially Central Coast to South Coast, South Coast to Ashland, and Ashland to Bend—and leave Eastern Oregon for another trip.
