How to eat here
Swarthmore itself is for a café stop, a simple meal, or food timed around the college—not a dedicated dining trip. Eat around College Avenue Village for maximum convenience to the station and campus; choose nearby Media Borough when dinner, drinks, and a real choice of independent restaurants matter, then take SEPTA back or drive.
College-town café-and-light-lunch eating: coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and an easy daytime stop before or after the campus and Scott Arboretum. · A quiet early dinner near the village, particularly practical for college visitors and guests at the Inn at Swarthmore. · Media Borough’s main-street dinner-and-drinks tradition: the stronger nearby option for a full evening meal, bars, and more varied independent dining. · Seasonal outdoor-visit provisions: bring or pick up a simple picnic-style lunch for the arboretum or a Crum Woods walk, rather than expecting food within the garden-and-woods area.
- Use College Avenue Village for breakfast, coffee, lunch, and convenience; it is the only Swarthmore district with a meaningful cluster of visitor services, but it is a very small strip rather than a broad restaurant scene.
- For a proper dinner or an evening out, plan Media Borough. It is a short trip on SEPTA’s Media/Wawa Line from Swarthmore, but not realistically walkable from the college for most visitors.
- Do not count on late-night eating in Swarthmore: evenings are notably quiet, especially during college breaks. Eat earlier, check current hours, and have a backup plan if arriving late by train.
- Scott Arboretum & Crum Woods has no dining infrastructure. Carry water and snacks or eat in the village before heading out; uneven woodland paths and darkness make a post-walk food search a poor plan.
- College events, academic-calendar rhythms, and weekend demand can affect the small local supply. For a meal tied to graduation, reunion, performance, or a college visit, reserve ahead where reservations are offered.
- Media’s restaurant and bar blocks are livelier but can be busier and noisier on weekend and event nights; allow extra time for parking if driving. Swarthmore is the calmer choice, Media the better food choice.
