Munich
Base · 4 days
Bavaria’s strongest first base: major museums, palaces, parks, beer gardens and enough substance for several full days. It also makes the most sense for car-free lake or mountain day trips.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
The practical high-Alpine add-on from Munich, with the Zugspitze, Partnach Gorge, cable cars and proper hiking. Stay here rather than trying to cram the mountains into a rushed day trip.
Füssen
Base · 2–3 days
The sensible base for Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Alpine lakes and the Wieskirche. The castles are busy, but Füssen works well when paired with slower Allgäu scenery rather than treated as a one-photo stop.
Nuremberg
Base · 3 days
Northern Bavaria’s best all-round base, combining an imperial old town with serious Nazi-era history and excellent rail links to Bamberg and Franconian Switzerland. Come for substance rather than a flawless medieval fantasy.
Bamberg
Bavaria’s most rewarding small city: dense old quarters, hilltop churches, river views and breweries all fit into a walkable center. It is doable from Nuremberg, but an overnight stay is much better than a rushed day trip.
Würzburg
Base · 2 days
A Baroque city with the Residence, fortress views and access to Franconian vineyards and wine taverns. It is the right choice for travelers who want Bavaria’s wine culture rather than another beer-hall itinerary.
Regensburg
Base · 2 days
A remarkably intact medieval city on the Danube, with a calmer, more lived-in feel than Munich. Use it as the anchor for an eastern Bavaria route and add Kelheim or Weltenburg Abbey rather than forcing it into a castle week.
Berchtesgaden
Base · 3 days
The base for Königssee, Berchtesgaden National Park and Bavaria’s most dramatic lake-and-mountain landscapes. It merits two or three nights, especially for hiking, not a punishing return trip from Munich.
Chiemgau
The lake-and-foothills country around Prien and Chiemsee is the easygoing alternative to full Alpine logistics: boat trips, swimming, cycling and Herreninsel. It works best as a Munich day trip or a relaxed summer stop.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Short stop · 1 day
The Romantic Road icon is genuinely striking, especially on its walls and lanes before the day-trippers arrive. One night is usually enough unless you are using it as a cycling base in the Tauber Valley.
Bavarian Forest
A quiet, heavily wooded counterpoint to Munich and the Alps, centered on national-park trails, granite ridges and glassmaking towns such as Zwiesel. It rewards travelers with a car and time to slow down.
Munich and the accessible Alps
7 daysMunich (4 days) → Füssen (3 days)
The cleanest first Bavaria trip for travelers who want a real city stay plus castles and mountain scenery. Give Munich its due, then use Füssen for Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and the lakes instead of attempting everything from one base.
Plan this routeClassic Bavaria: city, castles and Franconia
10 daysMunich (4 days) → Füssen (2 days) → Augsburg (1 day) → Nuremberg (3 days)
For a first visit that wants more than Munich and Neuschwanstein. Augsburg breaks up the westbound travel, while Nuremberg provides time for its history and a Bamberg day trip; this is much more workable with a car after Munich.
Plan this routeBavaria north to south
14 daysNuremberg (3 days) → Würzburg (2 days) → Regensburg (2 days) → Munich (4 days) → Berchtesgaden (3 days)
A deeper route for travelers who want Franconian wine, Danube cities, Munich and a serious Alpine finish. Bamberg fits as a Nuremberg day trip; a rental car becomes worthwhile for vineyard country and the Berchtesgaden area.
Plan this routeFranconia without the Alpine clichés
6 daysNuremberg (3 days) → Würzburg (2 days) → Rothenburg ob der Tauber (1 day)
A compact northern Bavaria route for history, beer, wine and compact cities rather than castles and cable cars. Base in Nuremberg for Bamberg and Franconian Switzerland, then finish with Würzburg’s wine country and one carefully timed Rothenburg overnight.
