How to eat here

Eat by neighborhood rather than directly beside the biggest monument: the most obvious squares often have the weakest value and most tourist-oriented menus. Rome rewards a simple rhythm of a bar breakfast, a proper lunch or dinner, and an evening passeggiata; check the menu for any coperto before sitting down. Trastevere is enjoyable for an evening but its busiest lanes are not automatically its best tables, while Testaccio is a stronger choice when food is the main objective rather than landmark proximity.

• Reserve dinner in popular neighborhoods, especially Thursday through Saturday and during spring and autumn.
• Avoid choosing solely by a view of Trevi, the Colosseum, or the Vatican entrance; walk a few blocks and read the menu before committing.
• Lunch is useful for recovering from heat and walking; do not schedule back-to-back timed sights through the middle of a summer day.
• For churches and museum days, carry water and a small snack, but plan seated meals around your fixed-entry time rather than assuming a quick table will appear nearby.
