New Chitose Airport: For Hirafu, take a winter direct airport coach to the Hirafu Welcome Center rather than attempting a rail connection with ski bags. The Chuo Bus Chitose–Niseko line is about 3 hr 33 min and roughly ¥6,000 one way (¥10,000 return in the cited 2025 season); other seasonal resort coaches run similar routes. Reserve in ski season and check the timetable—these are seasonal services, not an all-year airport link. Outside coach operation, take rail via Otaru to Kutchan, then the local bus/taxi to Hirafu; it is slower and connections are sparse.
Sapporo Station: Rail is the sensible public-transport option: take a frequent train to Otaru, change to the local JR service for Kutchan, then allow another 20 minutes by local bus or taxi to Hirafu. Budget around 3 hours overall; the evening Niseko Liner can run direct from Sapporo to Kutchan. A winter coach can be quicker on a clear day but is at the mercy of snow traffic—do not plan it against a tight flight connection.
Kutchan Station: This is the useful railhead for Grand Hirafu: connect onward by local bus or taxi, about 20 minutes. It is not in Hirafu itself, so do not book a Kutchan-station hotel assuming you can walk to the lifts.
Niseko Station: Use this only if staying in Niseko Town or near Annupuri/Niseko Village with a pre-arranged pickup. It has sparse local trains from Otaru and Oshamambe and is less useful than Kutchan for Hirafu.
Hakodate Station / Oshamambe Station: From Hakodate, take a limited express to Oshamambe and change to a local train for Kutchan; allow about 3 hr 40 min from Hakodate or 1 hr 10 min from Oshamambe, plus the transfer to your resort. This is viable only if you are already travelling through southern Hokkaido, not a shortcut from Tokyo.
